This detection identifies certain older versions of the MacKeeper program (released before 2019), which display unsolicited advertising content in the web browser.
Based on the settings of your F-Secure security product, it may either automatically block, quarantine or delete the program or file, or ask you to select an action.
A False Positive is when a file is incorrectly detected as harmful, usually because its code or behavior resembles known harmful programs. A False Positive will usually be fixed in a subsequent database update without any action needed on your part. If you wish, you may also:
Check for the latest database updates
First check if your F-Secure security program is using the latest updates, then try scanning the file again.
Submit a sample
After checking, if you still believe the file is incorrectly detected, you can submit a sample of it for re-analysis.
Note: If the file was moved to quarantine, you need to collect the file from quarantine before you can submit it.
Exclude a file from further scanning
If you are certain that the file is safe and want to continue using it, you can exclude it from further scanning by the F-Secure security product.
Note: You need administrative rights to change the settings.
The older MacKeeper program can either display pop-up ads during a web browsing session, or redirect users to unsolicited advertising content. Some users have also reported that the program causes performance issues for their devices.
The program may be installed as part of an application bundle. Users may be unaware that this program was installed if the application bundle did not clearly disclose the presence of additional programs during its own installation.
There have been reports that the older MacKeeper program is difficult to uninstall, as users need to manually delete additional files that the program has saved on the machine, as well as uninstall extensions it has added to the browser, to completely remove the program.
F-Secure has re-analyzed the latest version of MacKeeper as of April 2021 and concluded that the program has taken a turn for the better and no longer presents the Adware elements described above.
